Besides, there are many homeowners who do not have the slightest idea of how to go about it. A landscape business can thus be a lucrative line of business.

There are various types of landscaping services that you could offer. The more you offer the better, as you would be able to cater for varying clients’ needs and preferences.

- Mowing,
- fertilizing,
- weed removal and planting,
- tree removal, tree maintenance, tree lopping, tree surgery
- landscape design

This are just some of the services you could provide. You need to take into account your skills. If there is something you do not know that much about you could consider hiring one or more employees who could help you out. However, you need to consider this carefully as you would have to pay their wages, and thus your profits would decrease. So, you may wish to start small at first so as to see how it goes. You can always diversify later on.

Having said that, it may actually be a good idea to offer just a specific type of service. In such a way you would be standing out among your competitors as you would appear to be more specialized in that particular area. These considerations about your target market/s will help you establish what you will be offering.

Depending on the types of services you are going to offer, you need to buy the equipment that you will need. Some manual tools, a lawn mower, trimmers and other gardening tools are a must. You need to be well equipped and appear professional. Some tools, especially large ones may be rented. So if you cannot afford buying them for now, make sure to consider the rental option. It is important that you do everything by the book. So make sure to call your county or municipality so as to acquire the licenses and permits that are required to allow you to operate such a business. You will also have to register your business with the IRS, and consult an accountant who would be able to handle your accounts and taxes. It is also important to consider insurance coverage.

Once you have all the permits, tools and equipment, you can basically start advertising your business. Obviously you need to pick a name. Try to be creative and imaginative. Choose the advertising mediums that you can afford. You could start with printed adverts in local magazines, a few brochures or leaflets to distribute around, and business cards. You should also promote yourself online. Build a website and link it to forums, blogs and websites that are related to landscaping. You could also set up a Facebook page.

Once you start getting phone calls for quotes make sure that you are well prepared and that your rates are competitive. Bear in mind that a satisfied client will most likely remain a loyal one, and he/she will even help you by recommending your services to family and friends. So always maintain a good level of customer service, and you should lead your landscaping business to success. Good luck!
